7661, Private, James GOODY
1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Aged 25

Killed in Action on Thursday 18th February 1915

Born in Kirtling in Q3-1889 [Newmarket 3b:519] to James and Rachel GOODY,(née BALLS, previously married to Frederick Coppin who died in 1883), of The Cottages, Upend Road, Kirtling.

1891 census...James[1] was at Cottage, Upend Road, Kirtling with his father James [33], farm Labourer, born Kirtling ; his mother Rachel [32] born Lidgate; his half sisters Alice A COPPIN [10] born Southport, Lancs; Sarah COPPIN [8] born Hammersmith, and sister Emily [5] born Newmarket (Kirtling) and brother Edward [4] born Newmarket(Kirtling).

1901 census...James [11] was now at Vicarage Farm, Kirtling with his parent, father now Farm Foreman, and his sister Emily and new sisters Rachel J [3] and Daisy E [6months] both Kirtling born. Also there were his brother Edward and Frederick [9].

1911 census...James was with the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment in Egypt, and his family had moved to 2 Brighton Terrace, Queen Street, Newmarket. James was a regular soldier overseas at Mustapha Pasha Barracks, Alexandria, Egypt.

He enlisted in Wisbech. Unfortunately, despite his being a regular soldier, his records are missing.

The First Battalion moved from Khartoum and arrived in France in 1915. It was involved in heavy fighting around Ypres and in May was nearly wiped out with over 400 casualties.
On 18th February 1915 the 1st Suffolks, who had been alternatively holding water filled trenches or trying to capture 'O' trench, just south of Ypres, were relieved and went to billets in Kruistraat. The reason for 28 to be listed as killed on 18th would have been when the roll was called, some of these were those later presumed dead. Of the 28 only 2 have known graves.
